Tomatoes

Tomatoes respond to K applications when soil tests are below the recommended levels with higher yields of better quality fruit that size properly, and that ship and store better. In recent California field trials, both the foliar and sidedress applications of SOP increased yields and soluble solids of tomatoes (Carlisle, 1995).

Tomatoes deficient in S often develop pale green color in the lower leaves and purple discoloration in stems and petioles. Stems of S-deficient tomatoes are often low in reducing sugars, but high in starch, soluble N and sucrose (Scott and Eaton, 1951). Additional deficiency symptoms include woody stems, small, poorly developed fruit, low vitamin C content, and poor taste (Doiya, 1955).
