Berries
In
practice, small fruits are well fertilized and the incidence of nutrient
deficiencies, such as S, are not common. However, because of high fertilizer
rates the problem of salt and Cl toxicity does arise. Small fruits can
be classified for salt and Cl tolerance as follows (Zehler et al., 1981):
Fairly sensitive: Blackcurrant and strawberry
Very sensitive: Blackberry and blueberry
Extremely sensitive: Redcurrant and raspberry
Fruits, such as the redcurrant and raspberry, show
typical marginal leaf scorch at quite low Cl levels. Research in Europe
(Zehler et al., 1981) suggests that these crops be fertilized exclusively
with SOP.
